What is Ash Dieback?
Ash dieback is a serious disease affecting ash trees, caused by a fungus. The disease has been devastating ash populations across the UK and Europe. The fungus spreads through the air, carried by wind. It enters the tree through wounds in the bark or through the leaves. Once inside, it blocks the tree’s water transport system, leading to dieback and eventual death.
Ash dieback has had a significant impact on forests and landscapes across Scotland. Many ash trees have been lost, and the disease continues to spread.
Symptoms of ash dieback include:
- Leaf loss: Leaves turn black and fall prematurely.
- Crown dieback: Branches and twigs die off, starting from the top.
- Lesions: Dark, diamond-shaped lesions appear on the bark.
- Epicormic growth: Small shoots grow from the trunk in response to stress.
